From the outside, David Sutherland’s story might look like one of resilience. But for David, resilience wasn’t a choice, it was survival.
Growing up in Western Sydney, David was forced to become the man of the house far too early. Childhood was something that slipped through his fingers as he stepped up to shoulder responsibilities beyond his years.
School was no safe haven either. Subjected to bullying, he learned to defend himself not just physically, but emotionally too. And like many young men taught to “stay strong,” he bottled up pain, including the deep grief that came after the death of his brother years later.
Carrying unspoken trauma and the belief that vulnerability was weakness, David and his partner eventually moved to Hervey Bay to start a new chapter. But the peace he hoped for didn’t come.
Instead, fear and anxiety around providing for his own young family began to consume him. In an effort to cope, drugs and addiction crept into his life again offering a quick fix that soon turned into a destructive cycle.
David tried to keep his struggles separate from his home life, especially around his children. He worked away, doing whatever he could to support his family and give his kids the things he never had.
But the addiction never truly stayed away. It followed him through relapses, through broken trust, and through moments where he felt utterly lost.
The turning point came when he realised he wanted his family back – but more importantly, he needed to find himself again. That meant admitting he needed help. It meant letting go of the pressure to always be “the strong one” and learning that real strength comes from facing your struggles, not hiding them.
David took a leap and put his trust in the process of recovery. He connected with Bayside Transformations, a local recovery centre that quickly became more than a support system, they became part of his family. Through eight years of recovery, David has rebuilt his life from the ground up.
Today, David works in a mental wellness program at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, helping others navigate their own journeys through hardship, addiction, and healing. He shares his lived experience with honesty and courage, proving that recovery isn’t just possible, it’s powerful.
His advice to others?
“Be good with yourself. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone.”
